where can I get an STI test?

If you are 17 or older and live in the Republic of Ireland, you can order a free home STI test kit from the HSE. Public sexual health clinics test and treat for free. Many GPs, NGOs and student health services also test, for a fee.

01 A free home test kit, if you are 17 or older

The HSE runs a free home STI testing service for people aged 17 or older who live in the Republic of Ireland. The kits test for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV and syphilis, and sometimes hepatitis B or C.

  • You order online with your name, mobile number and address, and answer some questions about yourself.
  • The service is run for the HSE by SH:24. The kit arrives in discreet packaging.
  • You take your own samples and post them back in the stamped addressed envelope.
  • Results usually come within 72 hours of the lab getting your samples. Negative results come by text.
  • A positive result for chlamydia or gonorrhoea comes by text, with how to get free treatment at a sexual health clinic.

02 A free public sexual health clinic

The HSE says: “All STI testing and treatment in public sexual health clinics is provided free of charge.” You contact a clinic directly for an appointment. The HSE lists them by county.

In Dublin, the GUIDE Clinic at St James’s Hospital runs a Young Persons’ Clinic for people aged 20 and younger, every Thursday morning.

Questions first? The HSE HIV and Sexual Health Helpline gives confidential advice, free, on 1800 459 459, Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 5.30pm.

03 A GP, for a fee

“STI testing is also available through many GPs, NGOs or student health services for a fee.” If you want to talk to a doctor without your family GP, an online GP is another option. Ask the provider before you book whether it can arrange a test and what that costs.

Video or phone, depending on the provider. From €34.99: the lowest published weekday fee of the 16 online GPs we list.

Compare online GPs from €34.99

Your appointment is with the online provider, not your family GP, and the provider’s own privacy terms apply. Doctors owe young people confidentiality, but can’t promise absolute secrecy (what that means). You pay a fee. Under 18? Check the provider’s age rules before you book. Fees from each provider's own site, checked 29 October 2026, listed on gpcompare.ie.

Under 17?

The home kit is for people aged 17 or older. The HSE says that if you need urgent support, contact your GP or local sexual health clinic.
