A young man drinking tea in a kitchen at night, reading his phone

is this normal?

I've run out of my regular medicine

Happens to everyone. Prescriptions can now last up to 12 months.

  1. Pharmacy first

If your prescription was for 6 months, a pharmacist can extend it to 12 months in total. Ask at the pharmacy you use.

  2. Then an online GP

If it has run out completely, an online GP can usually renew a regular medicine after checking what you take.

Your appointment is with the online provider, not your family GP, and the provider’s own privacy terms apply. Doctors owe young people confidentiality, but can’t promise absolute secrecy (what that means). You pay a fee. Under 18? Check the provider’s age rules before you book. Fees from each provider's own site, checked 29 October 2026, listed on gpcompare.ie.
